Preparation is key when embarking on a ride as challenging as Spiti, and the most important part is ensuring that the bike is ready to tackle the tough terrain.
Bike Servicing: The first task was getting my Royal Enfield Meteor serviced thoroughly. I had the bike checked for everything—tyre condition, oil changes, lights, and any necessary adjustments. I couldn’t risk anything going wrong on these rough roads, so I made sure every detail was taken care of.
Essential Tools and Spares: I packed all the necessary bike tools and equipment, including a puncture kit and extra clutch and throttle wires. You never know when these might come in handy on such long rides, so it’s better to be prepared for any situation.
Clothing for All Conditions: I packed clothes for every weather condition—rain gear, warm layers for the cold, and breathable clothes for when it’s dry. The unpredictability of the weather in the mountains means being prepared for rain, cold, and sunshine, all in the same day.
Medications: I packed all the essential medications, including basic first aid, altitude sickness pills, and any other health essentials. Better to be safe than sorry when riding at high altitudes.
Tech Preparedness: This time, I went the extra mile by packing extra batteries for both my GoPro camera and DSLR. I didn’t want to miss capturing any of the stunning moments, so having backup power was a priority to make sure I never run out of juice.
Gear and Helmet Checks: I washed all my riding gear and cleaned my helmets. I also made sure the bike’s chain was properly lubed and that everything was packed and ready for the journey.
Packing Light: One important lesson I learned from my previous long rides was to pack light. This time, I packed only the essentials to make loading and unloading quick and easy. This would help save time and avoid any hassle during the ride.
With everything checked, packed, and ready, I was fully prepared for the journey ahead. Now, it’s time to hit the road and start this incredible adventure!
